In the case of a controversial waste heap on a poultry farm on Maryland's Eastern Shore, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) today imposed a $4,000 penalty on the Hudson Farm in Berlin, Maryland, for placing sewage sludge in a pile close to a drainage ditch.
The case triggered a lawsuit from the Waterkeeper Alliance and the Assateague Coastkeeper, which thought the pile was poultry waste. But an inspection by MDE concluded the pile was treated sewage sludge, not poultry litter, according to an MDE press release. Environmental Secretary Shari Wilson said: "Today's Administrative Complaint serves as a reminder that placement of material in a position likely to pollute waters of the State is a violation of Maryland law and threatens the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries."
