The plunging price of natural gas, caused by a new drilling strategy that uses hydraulic fracturing in shale formations across the U.S., is convincing electric companies to switch from building coal-fired power plants to gas generators, which produce less air pollution.

Unfortunately, the "fracking" process is even less environmentally regulated than the coal plant and coal mining emissions, creating a whole new range of concerns. (The movie "Gasland" by Josh Fox documents many of these very well). With the huge profit margins enjoyed by energy companies, it seems crazy that we can't access the energy in a more responsible manner.

coal statistics would suggest the commodity isn't going anywhere. Coal reports show if we have to live with it, we may as well reduce the impact of coal and CCS seems to be the best solution found to date.
