The results from the 2011 Blue Crab Stock Assessment are in and even though the numbers are lower than those of 2010, managers are still confident that the population of this important crustacean is still rebounding.
- Sewer upgrades that will help reduce pollution in Hampton Roads, VA will require long-term investments from the local sanitation authority.
- Ann Jennings of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation points out that the cost of cleaning our waterways should be seen as an investment that pays both economic and ecological dividends.
- Karen Lukacs of the Wicomico Environmental Trust in Maryland praises Wicomico County’s Watershed Implementation Plan (part of the federal pollution limits, known legally as the TMDL). But she also calls for citizens to take an active role in improving its commitments to clean water.
- Jeff Corbin, EPA’s senior advisor for the Chesapeake Bay, recently met with residents of Virginia’s Eastern Shore to discuss the new federal pollution limits, collectively known as the Bay TMDL.
- Maryland has approved plans to build a power plant that uses chicken waste to produce energy. The facility will be located at the Eastern Correctional Institute near Princess Anne.
