While others were enjoying the appetizing smell of burgers and dogs on the grill this past Labor Day weekend, residents around Aberdeen Creek, MD, suffered through a nauseating reek caused by a fish kill. About 100,000 fish died from a lack of oxygen when low tide locked them in a small cove. It was the largest fish kill in Maryland this year. Investigators found two types of algae among the fish and said it's possible that the decay of the algae contributed to the low oxygen levels. The fish were so numerous, local residents thought they were leaves coating the surface of the water.
