I would be much more concerned about municipal sewage discharge than septic systems. What percentage of nutriants come from septic systems?

Emmy Nicklin

No one is ignoring municipal sewer systems. The fact of the matter is that most Maryland residents are served by centralized sewers and they are a big pollution source; they are also more cost-effective to upgrade on a per person basis. That being said, septic systems do contribute about 7 percent of Maryland's nitrogen, and can not be ignored. Especially septic systems close to tidal and nontidal water, where a much higher percentage of that nitrogen reaches surface waters, largely untreated. To clean up the Bay, ALL sources must be reduced.
