Maryland Proposes New Oyster Sanctuaries

In an effort to rebuild populations of the decimated Chesapeake oyster, Governor Martin O'Malley today proposed the creation of 9,000 acres of oyster reef sanctuaries (the areas in dark green in the map posted below), where harvesting of the shellfish will be illegal.

Large sections of several rivers, including the Magothy, Chester, Miles and Little Choptank, will be off-limits to harvesting, while other areas will remain open and 600,000 acres will become available for private leasing to create oyster farms. For details, click here.Newoystermap
