This Week's Share: The Final Share of the Season!

Farm pizza

This week's photo is from CSA member Daniel who snapped photos of pizza being prepared at last week's pick-up. Thanks Daniel! Send us your own photos of what you see at the farm or what you're cooking with your weekly share, or post them to Instagram with hashtag #ClagettFarm. We'll feature them here!

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS

This week, the lettuce and tatsoi came from Three Part Harmony Farm, which is owned by Gail Taylor. She worked at Clagett Farm for 5 years before starting her own business. Her plots are all within the District, and you can read more about her efforts to improve the tax structure to support urban farming in this recent Washington Post article. She gifted us these greens in exchange for some help we gave her with her deer fence. Thanks Gail!

We would also like to give a shout-out to Elysian Energy. They have volunteered for us frequently over the years, as you can see from last week’s photo of them harvesting potatoes. A main part of their business is conducting home energy audits and installing insulation, so we took advantage of their expertise during their last visit. We have been suffering from a cramped germination shed, so they insulated a tool shed for us so we’ll have twice the cozy, warm space to germinate your seedlings next spring, and cure your sweet potatoes next fall. They donated all the supplies and labor and did a fantastic job. Thank you!

Gleaning Will Start November 21. We'll be offering members a chance to come and glean whatever is left in the fields the week before Thanksgiving, starting Friday November 21 through Sunday November 23. Details about what is included are included below.

Need a Turkey For Thanksgiving? We've gotten a few questions about potential sources for locally raised turkeys for Thanksgiving. One farm we've referred members to in the past is Ferguson Family Farm. If other members have recommendations, please let us know!

Christmas tree sales! We will be offering Christmas trees for sale for 3 weekends, 10am-2pm: 12/6/14, 12/7/14, 12/13/14, 12/14/14, 12/20/14, 12/21/14. Or make an appointment for another time at your convenience. It will be $40/tree, and we’ll also have our own, handmade wreaths. Because of a few factors, we'll have fewer trees in stock than normal. So this year, we will also be re-selling some fir trees from Pennsylvania. (We wanted to be sure no one made the trip to the farm without finding a nice tree to take home.) As always, we offer free hayrides, hot drinks, marshmallows to roast, and we encourage you to bring a picnic if the weather is nice. See you then!

Pizzas for sale at Today's Farm Pick-Up! Rob will be cooking pizzas for CSA members picking up at the farm today and Saturday. Donations would be very welcome (we can only accept cash or checks).

Gleaning Info to Come. We'll be offering members a chance to come and glean whatever is left in the fields the week before Thanksgiving. More details to come on that and what will be available.

See the Stars at the Farm: CSA Member Rebecca will be bringing her telescope to the last two Wednesday pick-ups at the farm (November 5 and 12).  With the time change coming up, it will be dark early enough to observe objects before the share pickup is over.

Need a Turkey For Thanksgiving? We've gotten a few questions about potential sources for locally raised turkeys for Thanksgiving. One farm we've referred members to in the past is Ferguson Family Farm. If other members have recommendations, please let us know!

THIS WEEK'S SHARE

1/4 pound total combination greens and carrots and lemongrass

5 pounds total combination sweet potatoes + sunchockes + green peppers + daikon radish

TIP OF THE WEEK: FREEZING GREEN PEPPERS

We are harvesting all the peppers at the farm this week and next. For those of you who take green peppers, these can be frozen and used this winter. Simply halve the peppers and remove the seeds, then chop them to a size of your liking. They'll freeze well inside a releasable freezer bag, and you can bring off the amount you need for recipes.

TIP OF THE WEEK 2!: USING SUNCHOKES

Sunchokes are delicious. If you haven't used them before, we highly recommend you pick some up and try them. Here's a guide on how to use sunchokes and here's a simple recipe for Pan Roasted Sunchokes
