The CSA season may be over but we're still busy at the farm. Here's what you need to know about the Holiday Trees & Wreaths, as well as our Gleaning days. 

 

Local Christmas Trees and Handmade Wreaths!
Available for Members and Non-Members 

 

Wreaths and trees will be for sale in front of the barns (Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Clagett Farm, 11904 Old Marlboro Pike, Upper Marlboro MD 20772) from 10am - 2pm on the 4 weekends after Thanksgiving:

Nov. 28 - 29, December 5-6, 12-13, 19-20, or by appointment (301-627-4662) any other day.

About the Holiday Trees

• Locally grown, minutes outside D.C.
• Just $40 for any size!
• All sizes available
• Pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer-free (you won't find that from any other tree dealer near you)
• A fun outing for the whole family.
• We can help cut the tree and strap it to your car.

U-Pick trees are Scotch Pine and White Pine, which grow best in our region. Firs are also available as pre-cut trees.

Why Holiday trees?  Clagett Farm is a hilly place--not the right spot for a lot of plowing.  The hills have been heavily eroded from the years of tobacco farming before our time, which makes them a poor spot for most crops.  Holiday trees are a way of keeping the hills covered in vegetation, providing insect and animal habitat, and still making some money.

About Holiday Wreaths

You can now browse our assortment of beautiful, handmade wreaths.

Here's what you need to know:

• Supplies are limited so order ahead, and we will prepare the wreath fresh before you arrive at the pick up date you select
• Please order no later than 9am on the Thursday before your selected pick up date
• Pick up your wreath during Christmas Tree sale weekends
• CSA members have the option of farm or Dupont pick up (please see the message in your email)
• Pay at pick up with cash or check made out to Chesapeake Bay Foundation
• After you place your order you will receive a receipt in your email
• Check this blog for notifications about availability as the sale goes on

GLEANING AVAILABLE 
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19 THROUGH SUNDAY NOVEMBER 22
Available for CSA members only

Gleaning is available Friday November 20 through Sunday November 22 during daylight hours. When you arrive at the farm, go to the Wash Station. There on the board you’ll find directions to the individual crops.

Here’s what’s available:

• Greens: Spicy Mix, Arugula, Spinach, Lettuce, Kale, Tokyo Bekana, Ruby Streaks, Mizuna, Tat Soi, Collards, Swiss Chard.
• Turnips
• Broccoli
• Cabbage
• Bok Choy
• Herbs (or in the Herb Garden): Cardoon, Garlic/Onion Chives, Stevia, Parsley, Marjoram, Thyme, Mint, Sorrel, Lavender, Oregano, Dill, Sage, Nasturtium. Plus there’s garlic and lemongrass available on the bench at the wash station.

This Week's Share: It's the Final Share of the Season

First, thank you to everyone for a fantastic CSA season. We hope you are as pleased with the season as we are. We appreciate you hanging with us through the weather ups and downs, our battles with hungry critters, and potential delays due to Papal visits! 

Before the season ends, we want to give a special shout out to three of our team who will be leaving for other adventures (some on farms, some not) as the season ends: Genevieve Fulco, Jeanette Proudfoot and Hannah Stocker. 

We'll have a few more updates coming to you over the next few weeks (see the Announcements below), and then you'll hear from us again in January when it's time to renew!

Announcements:

• Gleaning: The weekend before Thanksgiving (Nov. 20-22), you can come pick anything you want at the farm. Most of it will be salad greens. There will also be some sunchokes to dig. We'll provide an update closer to 11/20. Between the last share on the 14th and the gleaning that will start on 11/20, there will not be u-pick available at the farm. 

• Honey and Garlic for Sale: At both pick-ups this week, we'll have honey ($10/1 pound jar) and garlic ($5/pound) for sale. 

• Preorder your holiday wreath this year! Starting Friday, November 20th, select from a variety of unique wreaths handmade by Clagett staff. Pick up your order during the Christmas tree sales, every weekend from November 28th to December 20th. Wreaths will be first come first serve and supplies are limited so place your orders early! When we post info about wreaths, we'll also share updates about trees as well. 

• End-of-season survey: We'll also be sending out a brief survey soon about what you liked about this year's CSA and what you'd want to see different next year. Keep an eye out for that as well.

 

THIS WEEK'S SHARE

3 1/4 pounds total combination:

• Sweet potatoes
• Sunchockes
• Greens  (kale, collards, spicy mix, lettuce, arugula) 
• Cabbages (while they last)
• Garlic 
• Turnips
• Pea shoots (for salad or garnish) from Erik de Gzman, a former Clagett team member who  now runs Dicot Farm in Waldorf, MD
• Plus there are some small quantities of other items, including carrots

WHAT'S ON U-PICK THIS WEEK:

• Spicy mix
• Swiss chard
• (you dig!) Sunchockes. But be warned, it's muddy and it's a pain. 
• Culinary Herbs: Sorrel, sage, onion chives, garlic chives, thyme, oregano, anise hyssop, mint, parsley, stevia, marjoram. Cardoons are also available in the herb beds. 
• Flowers: As always, any flowers you find and available to pick. 
• Medicinal Herbs: holy basil, echinacea, alfalfa, calendula, wormwood, and skullcap

A couple notes

• If you don't know what to do with sunchokes, here's a recipe we like for Pan Roasted Sunchokes.  

• If you haven't yet tried the hakurei turnips, do yourself a favor and grab some either this week or next. They're especially delicious this year.
