This week's photo comes from Becca. Want to see your photos featured in this weekly email? Just snap a pic -- from the farm, from your CSA share itself, or even a recipe you make with your Clagett produce -- and either email it to us or post it to Instagram with the hashtag #ClagettFarm!
Good news and bad news: The bad news is that the movie night is sold out. Registration is free but limited, and those slots have filled. The good news is that we are going to hold a special event just for Clagett CSA members and volunteers. We'll have a free pizza party in your honor on Saturday October 26th, 3:00-6:00pm. We'll make the pizzas in our clay oven, and there will be hay rides to visit the cows. Come relax and enjoy camaraderie with your farmers and fellow members.
Noticing your share getting smaller? We are in a drought! We haven't had a soaking rain since July. Most of those days since then have had highs in the 90s, so the soil is PARCHED. We're focusing our limited irrigation on keeping your fall greens and roots growing. And we're getting hit hard by desperate deer and groundhogs. Here's a few things to keep in mind in these challenging times:
The first half of our growing season was phenomenally productive. Weather makes a difference! We have so much to be grateful for.
-Can you believe that the pepper plants are still producing peppers without a lick of irrigation?! They're small peppers, but still delicious. Plants are amazing.
-Although there are fewer pounds in your share, they pack a nutritional punch. Because the peppers, tomatoes and squash have been grown without irrigation, they have more vitamins and minerals per ounce. They aren't as dilute, and also the stress makes the plants generate more enzymes. Cool, huh?
-In this week when climate change is in the front of our minds and in the news, let's use this as extra motivation to push our governments into action. Farmers need predictable, moderate weather to grow your food!
-We're in this together, my friends. We appreciate knowing that all of you are joining in the risk of farming by our sides. You are good people and we thank you!
